My boss usually does a big spiel for all the comp kids that varies each delivery but always goes along the lines of "whatever happens today you did amazing to be here at all" especially for the girls for states as there are SO MANY GIRLS doing gymnastics and you have to top 8 at least one apparatus to get to states.
Happily this year (for the gym programs in general, maybe not so much for the boys who are used to just getting a place for showing up) there are now enough boys that we have multiple rounds now and non-zero chance some of them are going to "miss out".
