"Yeah it has." He replied, fighting every urge to pull her into his arms. She was too far from his reach now. "Um... Eric, this is Liam. We...we went to high school together" Ava said to her husband. "Liam, this is my husband, Eric" "Husband..." Liam muttered under his breath and they shook hands. "So what brings you back to California?" "Ava insisted that we have a honeymoon in the city she grew up in and I'm not complaining so here we are." Eric breathed. "I need to take this call. Meet you at the house" he added before walking away. Liam lifted her suitcase and set it down in the trunk. "You're the driver?" "I'm filling in for a friend. He's busy. So you got married? He seems like a catch. How did you two meet?" Liam asked as he slammed the trunk shut. "At a conference in New York. What about you? How did life go for you after highschool" She stirred away from the topic and got into the car. He followed. "Shitty. Compared to your life" he said as he sat in the driver's seat and glanced at her in the rearview mirror. "Any...Any special girl in your life?" She asked awkwardly. "Nope." He popped the 'p' and turned on the ignition. "I guess some people never really move on" She didn't speak for the rest of the ride. They arrived at her old house and he helped them carry her bags up to the bedroom. "You know most people have honeymoons in really exotic places. Places that would be memorable. Not their childhood home..." He broke the silence. "Yes" she breathed. "But I've been to all those places, Eric takes vacations and business trips all over the world. I've seen everything that once interested me. But I missed this place. This house. The experience" "The people?" Liam inquired. He picked up a fallen scrap and twirled it in between his fingers. "The people. Did you ever leave?" She asked. "Once but I found myself running back. "Your husband will be home soon. If you need anything... You know where to find me. That's if you remember" He said and walked out. It had been nine years since they had seen each other. Nine long years later she promised to call every night but never did. Nine years since Ava deserted him and never looked back. He couldn't blame her. Their highschool love story was typical. The perfect movie stereotype, the nerd and the bad boy. They started off as childhood friends, grew into strangers, hated each other before falling for each other again. "Most relationships don't make it past high school" His friend, Kevin had said. They fell into that category, Ava was an ambitious young girl who wanted to conquer the world. She made a list for everything, from the things she would do for the day down to a check list for her "ideal" partner. Ironically, Eric fit every box. Liam was nonchalant and stubborn, "too cool for school", he had grown to regret his miniscule effort to secure a somewhat decent future. Maybe if he had studied as hard as his girlfriend, he would have gotten on flight with her to Massachusetts. "A fully funded scholarship". He remembered how excited she was about finally getting into Harvard law. It didn't matter tho. "I'll come back. I'll call you every day. Every single night until I graduate. I'll come visit. Promise you'll wait for me" she said. He called after her flight landed, they talked and that was the last time they spoke. Whenever he'd call, she would ignore. Had he wronged her? He would never know. And now here she was again, married and happy while he had spent the last nine years hoping for a miracle. He was sentimental and his life would have been so much better if he'd never met Ava. He stood at the grassy shores of the lake, skipping stones on the water. This was their spot. Their first kiss and sex happened on this same lake side. "You f**king idiot" he cursed himself. Liam paused when he heard footsteps walking up to him. "Liam..." Ava called. He turned to see her in a grey knitted cardigan. "It's not a good habit to keep gifts from your exes, especially one you had nine years ago," he started. "Liam I can explain…" "Explain what? How you ghosted me for nine years? I threw my whole life away because of you! You told me to wait for you! And I did! Everyday I hoped that you'd come back. You never called. Once! Even Amber called. You remember Amber? Your best friend? You ghosted her too remember?" "I'm sorry. I thought you'd have moved on by now" He scoffed at her in disbelief. "I've loved you my entire life. You really think someone who gets as attached as me would just give up and go home? I guess maybe I should have" "I loved you too" "Of course you did. Why did you come back here? To show off? To rub it in my face? Well congratulations, you're doing great" "I came to see you" she confessed. "Incase you forgot, you're married now." "He doesn't love me" "Well good for you. I have no intention of reconnecting or rekindling any relationship I thought we had. I don't know what the hell is wrong with you" he rubbed his temples with his fingers and tried to stop himself from erupting in emotions. "I made a terrible decision" she cried. "Decisions come with consequences, Ava. Enjoy your honeymoon" he dismissed before walking past her. She called after him while he got into his car and drove off. He had made a decision, he would leave the city. He would go somewhere far away and he would never look back. He would be selfish and live for only himself for it had taken him way too long to learn a lesson and he would get back on his feet, never to be brought down by the shackles of love ever again, it was too late for a second chance...

"Sí que ha pasado". Respondió, luchando contra el impulso de atraerla a sus brazos. Ella estaba demasiado lejos de su alcance ahora. "Um... Eric, este es Liam. Nosotros... fuimos juntos al instituto" le dijo Ava a su marido. "Liam, este es mi marido, Eric" "Marido..." Liam murmuró en voz baja y se dieron la mano. "¿Y qué te trae de vuelta a California?" "Ava insistió en que tuviéramos una luna de miel en la ciudad en la que creció y no me quejo, así que aquí estamos". Eric respiró. "Tengo que atender esta llamada. Nos vemos en la casa" añadió antes de alejarse. Liam levantó su maleta y la dejó en el maletero. "¿Eres el conductor?" "Estoy sustituyendo a un amigo. Está ocupado". ¿Así que te has casado? Parece un buen partido. ¿Cómo os conocisteis?" preguntó Liam mientras cerraba el maletero. "En una conferencia en Nueva York. ¿Y tú? ¿Cómo te fue la vida después del instituto?" Ella se apartó del tema y subió al coche. Él la siguió. "Una mierda. Comparado con tu vida" dijo mientras se sentaba en el asiento del conductor y la miraba por el espejo retrovisor. "¿Alguna... alguna chica especial en tu vida?" Preguntó incómoda. "No". Él hizo sonar la "p" y encendió el contacto. "Supongo que algunas personas nunca siguen adelante" Ella no habló durante el resto del viaje. Llegaron a su antigua casa y él les ayudó a subir las maletas al dormitorio. "Sabes que la mayoría de la gente tiene lunas de miel en lugares realmente exóticos. Lugares que sean memorables. No en la casa de su infancia..." Rompió el silencio. "Sí", dijo ella. "Pero yo he estado en todos esos lugares, Eric toma vacaciones y viajes de negocios por todo el mundo. He visto todo lo que alguna vez me interesó. Pero echaba de menos este lugar. Esta casa. La experiencia" "¿La gente?" preguntó Liam. Recogió un trozo caído y lo hizo girar entre sus dedos. "La gente. ¿Alguna vez te fuiste?" Preguntó. "Una vez, pero me encontré volviendo corriendo. Nueve largos años después ella prometió llamar todas las noches pero nunca lo hizo. Nueve años desde que Ava le abandonó y nunca miró atrás. Él no podía culparla. Su historia de amor en el instituto era típica. El perfecto estereotipo de película, el empollón y el chico malo. Empezaron como amigos de la infancia, se convirtieron en extraños, se odiaron antes de volver a enamorarse. "La mayoría de las relaciones no pasan del instituto", había dicho su amigo Kevin. Ellos entraban en esa categoría, Ava era una joven ambiciosa que quería conquistar el mundo. Hizo una lista para todo, desde las cosas que haría durante el día hasta una lista de verificación para su pareja "ideal". Irónicamente, Eric encajaba en todas las casillas. Liam era despreocupado y testarudo, "demasiado guay para la escuela", había llegado a lamentar su minúsculo esfuerzo por asegurarse un futuro algo decente. Quizá si hubiera estudiado tanto como su novia, habría conseguido volar con ella a Massachusetts. "Una beca totalmente financiada". Recordó lo emocionada que estaba ella por haber entrado por fin en Derecho en Harvard. Pero no importaba. "Volveré. Te llamaré todos los días. Todas las noches hasta que me gradúe. Vendré a visitarte. Promete que me esperarás", dijo. Él llamó después de que su vuelo aterrizara, hablaron y esa fue la última vez que hablaron. Cada vez que él llamaba, ella lo ignoraba. ¿La había perjudicado? Nunca lo sabría. Y ahora aquí estaba ella de nuevo, casada y feliz mientras él había pasado los últimos nueve años esperando un milagro. Era un sentimental y su vida habría sido mucho mejor si nunca hubiera conocido a Ava. Estaba en la orilla del lago, saltando piedras en el agua. Este era su lugar. No tengo ninguna intención de volver a conectar o reavivar cualquier relación que creía que teníamos. No sé qué demonios te pasa" se frotó las sienes con los dedos y trató de evitar que estallara en emociones. "He tomado una decisión terrible" lloró. "Las decisiones tienen consecuencias, Ava. Disfruta de tu luna de miel", dijo él antes de pasar junto a ella. Ella lo llamó mientras él entraba en su coche y se marchaba. Había tomado una decisión: dejaría la ciudad. Se iría a un lugar lejano y nunca miraría atrás. Sería egoísta y viviría sólo para sí mismo, ya que había tardado demasiado en aprender la lección, y volvería a ponerse en pie, para no dejarse abatir nunca más por los grilletes del amor, ya era demasiado tarde para una segunda oportunidad…
