Humans have been the direct cause of countless extinctions, and going unchecked, may very well be our own assassins. The deserts aren't getting smaller, and we (as humanity) aren't exactly slowing down our planetary conquest. In re the Malthusian thought: I kind of agree that we will ultimately supersede our resources on this planet but, better resource management should be the focus and is where I break off of that philosophy and I'm hoping we conquer the stars way before that happens.
