**Versión en Español:** La minería tradicional es una de las actividades del ser humano que más impacto tienen sobre el medio ambiente, pues produce grandes cantidades de sustancias contaminantes, además de que destruye el hábitat de múltiples especies de la naturaleza. En nuestro mundo hiperconectado, muchos de estos elementos metálicos son indispensables para mantener nuestro estilo de vida y continuar con la innovación, por lo que leyes reguladoras muy estrictas son muy difíciles de aplicar. En este contexto, ha surgido una nueva actividad que podría cambiar el ámbito de la minería, ayudando en la sostenibilidad del medio ambiente en gran medida, sin afectar a las nuevas tecnologías que dependen de estos elementos, la Fitominería. ![](https://images.ecency.com/DQmWJ8EknynyvTTXshSvPq6sZ4ubEtfDZnpPz7Q1umvtEmV/image.png) Fuente Para poder entender en qué consiste, debemos saber que hay algunas plantas que son capaces de absorber y concentrar en sus tejidos diferentes metales como el níquel, indispensable para desarrollar artículos electrónicos. El primer espécimen del que se tuvo registro Phyllanthus Balgooyi, una planta de la jungla de Filipinas, que al cortarla produce una salvia de color verde fosforescente, que contiene una concentración de un 9% de níquel aproximadamente. Pero no solamente este metal es el que se podría minar, pues también hay reportes de cobalto, zinc, o incluso, oro. Los científicos en este momento están buscando la posibilidad de volver esta actividad como algo comercial, pues aún esta muy lejos de proporcionar una cantidad que sea viable económicamente. Actualmente, las plantas que mayor rendimiento tienen pueden apenas producir 50 kg aproximadamente por hectárea, es decir, 1000 m², por lo que aún no es viable más allá de la investigación científica, al ser insuficiente para cubrir la demanda comercial en el corto plazo. Recientemente el departamento de energía de los Estados Unidos destinó 9,9 millones a 7 proyectos diferentes centrados en esta área. Existen en este momento un aproximado de 750 plantas llamadas hiperacumuladoras, es decir, que son capaces de absorber en grandes cantidades estos metales, prosperando en tierras con altas concentración de los mismos, ambiente donde muchas otras especies no podrían proliferar por su alto grado de toxicidad. Estos proyectos se centrarán en lograr plantas que aumenten la absorción y producción de estos metales, mediante modificaciones genéticas que hagan que estas sean más grandes, se reproduzcan o crezcan más rápidamente, para aprovechar de mejor forma el espacio que se destine para las plantaciones. Así mismo, en territorios poco explorados, como la misma selva filipina, se buscan nuevas especies con estas características, que de por sí tengan mayor capacidad de absorción, o que pueden llegar a ser más dúctiles, para que estas modificaciones sean más efectivas. Aunque la fitominería tiene ya varios años desde que se describió por primera vez, la exploración de esta actividad aún está en fases muy precoces, dado al bajo rendimiento que se reportó inicialmente, pero gracias al trabajo de muchos investigadores, se está planteando como un proceso revolucionario para ir sustituyendo poco a poco a la minería tradicional, gracias especialmente, a su menor capacidad de contaminación y daño de los hábitats, pudiendo ser incluso un arma efectiva para luchar contra la contaminación, por la absorción de metales de los suelos, haciéndolos menos tóxicos, así como por su habilidad para disminuir las concentraciones de CO² del ambiente. ![](https://images.ecency.com/DQmVyh7cdyH1xZoj6T76JtZRZ2HDNiz53tZkSsHjt2Rm3DN/image.png) Fuente Esto seguro será algo muy relevante en el futuro, pues aún no se cuentan con los datos suficientes, pero sabiendo de las modificaciones genéticas que se han hecho a diferentes plantas, buscando que sus frutos sean más grandes, o incluso, que sean más resistentes a las diferentes condiciones ambientales tan variadas por el cambio climático, pienso que ya tenemos la tecnología para avanzar en la dirección correcta, lo más seguro, es que aun falte financiamiento, y a medida que aumenten los porcentajes y sea más viable económicamente para la industrialización, llegara a un punto en que permita ayudar a la sostenibilidad delas actividades humanas, que al final es lo que necesitamos todos para mantener sano a nuestro planeta. --- --- **English Version:** Traditional mining is one of the human activities that has the greatest impact on the environment, producing large quantities of pollutants and destroying the habitat of multiple species in nature.
