Nuevamente me uno a esta prestigiosa comunidad de Hive. Stem social es un escenario abierto donde podemos exponer temas científicos y tecnológicos para los interesados en estos estudios. En esta ocasión, me propongo a traer un estudio que he realizado en mi universidad, acerca del Estireno y El Poliestireno. Ambos son monómero y polímero respectivamente y quiero esbozar un estudio de ambos intentando tocar todo lo concerniente a ellos pero haciéndolo entendible para todos los lectores. Así que sin más a que referirme, les presento: ------

## **UN ESTUDIO ACERCA DEL ESTIRENO Y EL POLIESTIRENO PARTE 1**

------- ### **Estireno** ---- El estireno es uno de los primeros compuestos vinílicos conocidos, si bien la explotación industrial de este material no comenzó hasta finales de la década de 1920. Este sencillo compuesto aromático fue aislado ya en 1839 por el químico alemán Edwar Simon. Las primeras soluciones de monómero fueron obtenidas a partir de resinas naturales como estoraque y sangre de dragón (una resina derivada de los frutos del árbol Deamonoraps draco de Malasia). En 1851, el químico alemán M. Berthelot registró la producción de monómeros de estireno mediante el paso de benceno y etileno a través de un tubo incandescente. Esta deshidrogenación de benceno de etilo es la base de los métodos comerciales actuales.

---- El estireno se conoce químicamente como vinil benceno, o bien como feniletileno, estirol, estyron, estiroleno y cinameno. Es un líquido de relativamente alto punto de ebullición. En la forma pura, este compuesto vinílico aromático se polimeriza lentamente por adición a temperatura ambiente. El monómero se obtiene comercialmente a partir de etil benceno. El estireno se puede polimerizar por polimerización en volumen, en disolvente, en emulsión o en suspensión. Los peróxidos orgánicos se utilizan para acelerar el proceso. El estireno puede ser copolimerizado con muchos monómeros tales como acrilatos, acrilonitrilos y cloruro de vinilideno, pero no con acetato de vinilo, a fin de obtener polímeros de más alta Tg y está –al igual que la mayoría de los monómeros acrílicos- inhibido para evitar la polimerización prematura utilizando TBC (t-butilcatecol)3. **Métodos de obtención de estireno** - Descarboxilación de los ácidos - Deshidratación de alcoholes - Pirólisis de acetileno - Pirólisis de hidrocarburos - Cloración y deshidrogenación de etilbenceno. **Métodos Down para obtener estireno** - Elaboración y purificación de etilbenceno. - Deshidrogenación de etilbenceno. - Purificación del estireno. - Tratamiento y usos posibles de los subproductos2. ----

I am once again joining this prestigious Hive community. Stem social is an open stage where we can expose scientific and technological topics for those interested in these studies. On this occasion, I propose to bring a study that I have carried out at my university, about Styrene and Polystyrene. Both are monomer and polymer respectively and I want to outline a study of both trying to touch everything concerning them but making it understandable for all readers. So without further ado, I present to you: ------

## **A STUDY ABOUT STYRENE AND POLYSTYRENE PART 1**

------- ### **Styrene** ---- Styrene is one of the first known vinyl compounds, although the industrial exploitation of this material did not begin until the late 1920s. This simple aromatic compound was isolated as early as 1839 by the German chemist Edwar Simon. The first monomer solutions were obtained from natural resins such as storach and dragon's blood (a resin derived from the fruits of the Malaysian Deamonoraps draco tree). In 1851, the German chemist M. Berthelot recorded the production of styrene monomers by passing benzene and ethylene through an incandescent tube. This dehydrogenation of ethyl benzene is the basis of current commercial methods.

---- Styrene is known chemically as vinyl benzene, or as phenylethylene, styrene, styron, styrene, and cinnamene. It is a relatively high-boiling liquid. In pure form, this aromatic vinyl compound slowly polymerizes by addition at room temperature. The monomer is obtained commercially from ethyl benzene. Styrene can be polymerized by bulk, solvent, emulsion, or suspension polymerization. Organic peroxides are used to speed up the process. Styrene can be copolymerized with many monomers such as acrylates, acrylonitriles and vinylidene chloride, but not with vinyl acetate, in order to obtain higher Tg polymers and is - like most acrylic monomers - inhibited to avoid premature polymerization using TBC (t-butylcatechol) 3. **Methods of obtaining styrene** - Decarboxylation of acids - Dehydration of alcohols - Acetylene pyrolysis - Hydrocarbon pyrolysis - Chlorination and dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. **Down methods to obtain styrene** - Preparation and purification of ethylbenzene. - Dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. - Purification of styrene. - Treatment and possible uses of by-products2. ----
