In recent years along with the medicine development, there is a growing importance of the engineering field such as medical robots, regenerative medicine and the simulation of the human body by the super computer. Among them, research on the field of Bionic Technology for producing an alternative to the part of the organ or body artificial is proceeding rapidly.

In the Bionic Technology, various things such as the Bionic Eye and Bionic Hand have been devised and actually carried out clinical trials. In this post I describe bionic hand and the bionic eye.

First, Bionic Hand is a prosthetic hand for people whose arm had been paralyzed and its clinical results have been reported in 2015. When the damage to the brachial plexus, which exist in the neck and shoulders are supplying the nerve to the whole arm, it becomes impossible to move the arm. So after cutting a damaged arm, Bionic Hand that can recognize the electrical signal of motor nerves was fitted to the three brachial plexus injury patients, it can be observed dramatic recovery of arm function. 　近年医学の発達に伴い、医療用ロボットや再生医療、スーパーコンピュータによる人体のシミュレーションなど、工学分野の重要性が高まっている。その中でも、人工で臓器や体のパーツの代わりになるものを作製するバイオニック技術という分野の研究が急速に進められている。

　バイオニック技術では、バイオニックアイやバイオニックハンドなど様々なものが考案されており、実際に臨床試験も行われている。本レポートではバイオニックハンドとバイオニックアイについて説明する。

　まずバイオニックハンドは2015年に臨床結果も発表されている、腕の神経の損傷により腕が麻痺してしまった人のための義手である。首と肩に存在し腕全体に神経を供給している腕神経叢を損傷した際には、腕を動かすことができなくなってしまう。そこで損傷した腕を切断して、運動神経の電気シグナルを認知することのできるバイオニックハンドを腕神経叢損傷患者3人に装着したところ、腕の機能の飛躍的な回復を観察することができた。このバイオニックハンドは従来の義手とは異なり、思考により起こる筋肉の収縮時に発生する電気シグナルを読み取り、モーターで動きを制御することができるので、実際の手のように使用することができる。さらに、免疫反応を起こすこともないため、生体適合性も非常に高く、未来の義手として注目されている。

　次にバイオニックアイについて説明する。バイオニックアイも2015に網膜色素変性症の患者を対象に臨床実験も行われており、かなり研究の進んでいるバイオニック技術の一つである。そもそも網膜色素変性症は視細胞が、年齢よりも早い段階で老化してしまい機能が失われてしまう病気である。病気の進行は非常に遅いが、進行していき何十年も経つことで視力が完全に失われてしまうおそれもある。バイオニックアイでは網膜色素変性症で網膜は正常に機能することを利用して視力回復の役割を果たす。最初に小型のカメラで画像をとらえ、その画像のイメージを体のベルトに取り付けている映像処理のためのビデオ変換器へ送る。さらに、その画像をサングラスの端にある電波送信機に電子シグナルとしておくり返し、それを眼の中の移植されたバイオニックアイが電子パルスとして網膜細胞に伝えることで大脳が光を感知できるという仕組みである。光の波長シグナルを電気信号として視神経に送るための装置である。実際にこのバイオニックアイを用いた臨床試験では10年前に失明し、明るい光のみしか認識することのできなかった患者が、人を認識することができるまでの機能改善を達成し、さらに人がたくさんいる部屋の中でも杖なしであるくことができるようになった例まで挙げられた。

　このように何十年も体の一部の機能の回復が見込めず苦しんでいた人々をも医学と工学が連携することで助けることができるようになってきている。現在ではまだこのような技術は非常に高額で、医療保険など法律の面でも技術についてきていないため、普及には幾分か時間は必要となりそうである。しかし、いつかこのような技術を誰しもが当たり前に利用でき、体の欠損で苦しむ人のいない世界もSFではなくなると考えられる。
