Esa noche celebraban la fiesta de Hallowen, noches que me hacían recordar el carnaval de mi lejana tierra, por los disfraces y las bromas. Unos niños llegaron a mi puerta y no quise abrirles, no deseaba ser contagiado por la alegría ni la ingenuidad de los mismos.

Vivía momentos terribles que parecían haberse multiplicado esa semana. La soledad transformaba mi santa paciencia en amargura y el mundo se confabulaba para que esta hiciera de mis pensamientos, jauría de elucubraciones insanas.

Estaba decidido a acabar con mi vida pero la insistencia de los golpes en la puerta lograron que mis manos temblorosas soltaran el arma que apuntaba mi frente. Por segundos, mientras desde mi ventana los espiaba alejándose, vino a mi mente la cara de mi pequeño hijo risueño ante la despedida hacía ya cuatro años.

El hasta luego se hizo eterno y los planes iniciales solo fueron quimeras. Estaba prisionero en otro país y en la indigencia. Sobrevivía haciendo lo que sea y la orden de desalojo de la casa que habitaba había llegado esa mañana, no atendiendo las suplicas que le hice al dueño. Lloraba de impotencia ya sin valor para suicidarme cuando el repique del teléfono me regresó a la realidad.

Lo tomé esperando otra mala noticia y desde el otro lado mi esposa preocupada me recriminó mi silencio por tantas semanas. Me armé de valor, le conté todo y lloramos juntos.

Después me dijo: ” tu abuelo murió, dejó todo a nombre tuyo y me pidió que te dijera que desea que regreses”. Quedé paralizado ante tal acto de desprendimiento de quien había sido un avaro toda la vida y recordé las palabras del anciano predicador que vivía unas casas después. Dios tiene solución a todo, solo debes creerle. Y aunque eso desafiaba mi fe tambaleante, ahora me demostraba que estaba en lo cierto.

Al fin pasaría la navidad con los míos.

That night they were celebrating Halloween, nights that reminded me of the carnival of my distant land, because of the costumes and jokes. Some children came to my door and I did not want to open it, I did not want to be infected by their joy or naivety.

I was living terrible moments that seemed to have multiplied that week. Loneliness transformed my holy patience into bitterness and the world conspired to turn my thoughts into a pack of insane lucubrations.

I was determined to end my life but the insistence of the knocking on the door made my trembling hands drop the gun pointed at my forehead. For seconds, while from my window I watched them walking away, my little son's face came to my mind, laughing at the farewell four years ago.

The goodbye became eternal and the initial plans were only chimeras. I was a prisoner in another country and destitute. I was surviving by doing whatever I could and the eviction order from the house I lived in had arrived that morning, not heeding the pleas I made to the owner. I was crying with helplessness and no longer had the courage to commit suicide when the ringing of the phone brought me back to reality.

I picked it up expecting another bad news and from the other side my worried wife reproached me for my silence for so many weeks. I plucked up my courage, told her everything and we cried together.

Then she told me: "your grandfather died, he left everything in your name and asked me to tell you that he wants you to come back". I was paralyzed before such an act of detachment from someone who had been a miser all his life and I remembered the words of the old preacher who lived a few houses later. God has a solution to everything, you just have to believe him. And though that challenged my shaky faith, it now proved me right.

I would finally spend Christmas with my loved ones.
