Frío blanco ¿una pesadilla real? 🏔️

Frío. Se sentía en todos lados, desde los huesos hacia afuera y de vuelta adentro; el molesto ruido de mis propios dientes en un castañeteo insoportable, tratando de cubrir mi boca con dos témpanos de hielo por manos, escondida en un espacio tan pequeño que la claustrofobia que padecía ya no era un impedimento, pues el pánico que sentía era superior. El viento resoplaba con ira... Pero antes de seguir, déjame contarte cómo inició todo. Mis padres querían pasar las fiestas en casa de la nona Aura. Con maletas, bolsos, comida y quién sabe qué más, emprendimos el viaje a Tucumán, Argentina, lugar de nacimiento de mi madre y mío propio, aunque ahora radicábamos en Chile desde hacía ya trece años. Cada año hacíamos el mismo viaje: papá, mamá, mi hermano Tomy, a quien ahora se unía su novia Lorena, yo, por supuesto, y Coco, mi pequeño perro. Todos arriba del auto, saliendo casi al alba, emprendimos el viaje. Mamá hablaba con papá, Tomy y Lore iban bien abrazados, y yo con Coco en mis piernas, imaginando las tortitas negras, el mate dulce y todo lo que la nona prepararía en estas fechas. En un instante me dormí con la cabeza apoyada en Lore, una hermana más que cuñada, y al abrir los ojos veía, tras el cristal de la ventana, ese aterrador escenario. El paso hacia abajo mostraba el verano, pero al llegar a la Aduana era como haber atravesado un portal a otra estación. El frío era insoportable, mucho más de lo normal, y el paisaje pintado completamente de blanco resultaba un escenario maravilloso para todos, menos para mí. Mientras mamá revolvía la maleta buscando las chaquetas, Lore temblaba como gelatina mientras Tomy la abrazaba más fuerte. Yo encontré mi chaqueta y, no sé por qué, en el bolsillo de esta estaba mi gorro de lana; agradecí al destino, ya que mi cabeza y orejas estarían calentitas. Agarré de paso una campera y envolví a Coco, mientras escuchaba el alegato en la ventanilla por la tardanza. Papá volvió con todos los documentos y llamó a mi hermano; irían por café caliente, ya que el frío era tanto que dolía el cuerpo. Es un perro pequeño pero viejo. Pero sin perder el control miré atrás y vi mis pasos en la nieve; lentamente volví sin borrar mis huellas. La ventisca emergía como si no quisiera que volviera a la aduana. El silencio era sepulcral: autos vacíos, micros vacíos, no había rastro de ningún alma humana. Avancé a la aduana; los baños vacíos, sin policías, sin nadie en las ventanillas. Grité fuerte: —¡Maaaaaaaaaamá! Pero no llegó respuesta. Con el corazón queriendo salir de mi pecho y por puro reflejo, corrí al auto. Abrí la puerta y estaba vacío; Coco aún dormía en el asiento. Con lágrimas en los ojos, entré al auto y cerré la puerta con seguro. La noche se hizo presente y el frío era insoportable. Salí con miedo y fui al maletero; saqué los dulces que llevábamos, también el pan que había quedado a medio comer y una botella de vino que papá le llevaba al tío Camilo. Aferrada a Coco, comí para mantener el calor; le ponía trocitos de pan en el asiento a mi perro mientras no dejaba de mirar por la ventanilla del auto, la misma que estaba tan empañada que me separaba del exterior, y al exterior de mí misma. La noche eterna, con el frío que me abrazaba como abraza una madre a su bebé recién nacido, me venció. Nuevamente el sueño me atrapó, y al despertar con el sol golpeando el cristal, pedía a gritos internos que todo hubiese sido una pesadilla. Pero no: estaba sola. Seguía sola, mientras el respirar de Coco en mi pecho me decía que todo era real. Salí del auto, tomé mi mochila y me la colgué a la espalda. Tomé la mochila de Lorena y metí a Coco adentro, junto con un poco de comida y agua. Me dije con fuerza que los encontraría, que quizás estaban todos en el refugio. Con esa mezcla de esperanza y miedo, avancé en la nieve espesa. Caminé no sé cuánto, con dolor en los pies, las zapatillas húmedas por la nieve y las mejillas quemadas por el sol y el frío. Coco, en su sitio, oculto, gruñía y me ponía los pelos de punta. De pronto, a lo lejos, pude ver una edificación grande, de piedra; sentí que por fin acababa el martirio. De seguro era el refugio y todos estarían ahí dentro. Colgaban personas desde el techo de aquel lugar, como si fuera carne secándose al aire. Algunas aún goteaban; sentía el eco de las gotas de sangre cayendo en el mismo sitio. Cubrí mi boca para no gritar y de pronto... un susurro. Era Lorena, atada por los pies, con los brazos heridos y los ojos inyectados en sangre: —Corre, Mariza... corre… Mientras decía esto, sentí cómo se abría la puerta del otro extremo. Miré a todos lados y encontré una abertura pequeña en la pared. Me metí como pude, sintiendo que no podía respirar. La claustrofobia no importaba mientras los gritos de los que aún estaban vivos hacían eco en este maldito sitio, y mientras alguien a quien aún no había visto tarareaba una canción que recordaba de algún sitio —quizás de un sueño—, al tiempo que veía cómo salpicaba la sangre por todos lados. —Despierta, Mariza. Vamos, pequeña remilgona, que en cinco minutos salimos a Argentina para ver a la nona Aura. Abrí los ojos sintiendo el frío en mi cuerpo y el olor a sangre en mi nariz. A lo lejos, Tomy en su habitación tarareaba la misma canción que cantaba aquel ser en ese sitio extraño. ¿Acaso solo estaba soñando?... *** ### English ***

Whiteout – a real-life nightmare? 🏔️

Cold. You could feel it everywhere, from the bones outwards and back in again; the annoying sound of my own teeth chattering unbearably, trying to cover my mouth with two ice floes for hands, hidden in a space so small that the claustrophobia I suffered from was no longer an obstacle, for the panic I felt was greater. The wind howled furiously… But before I go on, let me tell you how it all began. My parents wanted to spend the festive season at Grandma Aura’s house. With suitcases, bags, food and who knows what else, we set off on our journey to Tucumán, Argentina, my mother’s and my own birthplace, although we’d been living in Chile for thirteen years by then. Every year we made the same journey: Dad, Mum, my brother Tomy – who was now joined by his girlfriend Lorena – me, of course, and Coco, my little dog. All of us in the car, setting off at almost dawn, we began our journey. Mum was chatting to Dad, Tomy and Lore were cuddled up together, and I had Coco on my lap, imagining the black pancakes, the sweet mate and everything Grandma would be preparing at this time of year. In an instant I fell asleep with my head resting on Lore – more of a sister than a sister-in-law – and when I opened my eyes I saw, through the window, that terrifying scene. The descent down the pass felt like summer, but upon reaching the customs post, it was as if we’d stepped through a portal into another season. The cold was unbearable, much worse than usual, and the landscape, painted entirely white, was a marvellous sight for everyone—except me. Whilst Mum rummaged through the suitcase looking for our jackets, Lore was shaking like jelly as Tomy held her tighter. I found my jacket and, for some reason, my woollen hat was in the pocket; I thanked my lucky stars, as my head and ears would stay nice and warm. I grabbed a jacket as I went and wrapped Coco up in it, whilst listening to the explanation through the window about the delay. Dad came back with all the documents and called my brother; they were going to get some hot coffee, as it was so cold it made your body ache. He’s a small but old dog. But without losing my composure, I looked back and saw my footprints in the snow; I slowly turned back without erasing my tracks. The silence was deathly: empty cars, empty buses, not a trace of a single human soul. I made my way to customs; the toilets were empty, no police, no one at the counters. I shouted at the top of my voice: ‘Mummmmmm!’ But there was no reply. With my heart pounding in my chest and acting on pure instinct, I ran to the car. I opened the door and it was empty; Coco was still asleep in the seat. With tears in my eyes, I got into the car and locked the door. Night fell and the cold was unbearable. I got out, feeling scared, and went to the boot; I took out the sweets we’d brought with us, as well as the half-eaten bread and a bottle of wine that Dad was taking to Uncle Camilo. Clinging to Coco, I ate to keep warm; I placed bits of bread on the seat for my dog whilst I kept staring out of the car window—the very same window that was so fogged up it separated me from the outside world, and from myself. The endless night, with the cold embracing me as a mother embraces her newborn baby, got the better of me. Sleep overtook me once more, and when I woke to the sun beating down on the windscreen, I cried out inwardly for it all to have been a nightmare. But no: I was alone. I was still alone, whilst Coco’s breathing against my chest told me it was all real. I got out of the car, picked up my rucksack and slung it over my shoulder. I took Lorena’s rucksack and put Coco inside, along with some food and water. I told myself firmly that I would find them, that perhaps they were all at the shelter. With that mixture of hope and fear, I made my way through the thick snow. I walked for what felt like ages, my feet aching, my trainers damp with snow and my cheeks stinging from the sun and the cold. Coco, tucked away in his spot, was growling and sending shivers down my spine. Suddenly, in the distance, I could see a large stone building; I felt that my ordeal was finally coming to an end. It must be the refuge, and everyone would be inside. People were hanging from the ceiling of that place, as if they were meat drying in the open air. Some were still dripping; I could hear the echo of the drops of blood falling in the same spot. I covered my mouth to stop myself from screaming and suddenly… a whisper. It was Lorena, tied by her feet, her arms wounded and her eyes bloodshot: ‘Run, Mariza… run…’ As she said this, I felt the door at the other end swing open. I looked all around and found a small opening in the wall. I squeezed in as best I could, feeling as though I couldn’t breathe. The claustrophobia didn’t matter whilst the screams of those still alive echoed through this damned place, and whilst someone I hadn’t yet seen hummed a song I recognised from somewhere — perhaps from a dream — as I watched the blood splatter everywhere. ‘Wake up, Mariza. Come on, you fussy little thing, in five minutes we’re off to Argentina to see Grandma Aura.’ I opened my eyes, feeling the cold on my body and the smell of blood in my nose. In the distance, Tomy was in his room, humming the same song that the figure in that strange place had been singing.
