Quiet Snowy Holidays

“It's a huge gift, Mr. Woods, what could it be?” shouted Dory, Mrs. Diane's granddaughter, jumping around.
“I hope it's my new brand house,” joked the Blueberry Town gardener. People laughed amid an atmosphere filled with Christmas carols, holiday decorations, and freshly baked food in the Big House. Some took photos, others simply chatted, but most lay expectantly in front of the big Christmas tree to see what gift there was for each of them. “I'm sure it's the mower you always wanted, big guy!” said drunkenly Yule, the entrepreneur, about the anxious Mr. Woods. “Open it now!” shouted several children from the town. “First I'll read aloud who was so generous to me,” said Mr. Woods, before realizing there was no gift card. The gardener didn't stop, but when he was about to tear open Rudolph's wrapping, it burst open as if it had exploded, and a life-size Santa Claus emerged, leaving everyone speechless. The silence was like a snowball that hit the neighbors one by one. This unexpected gift was not only large and sculpted from fine mechanical parts, but it also had a life of its own. It took two steps and waved. It did a little dance with its belly and laughed. It was very funny to see. “Come on, guys, it's Christmas, where are your smiles?” asked the gift jokingly, leaving everyone still. “How wonderful!” reacted Mr. Woods after a few minutes of watching his funny companion. “A new member of Blueberry Town has joined,” announced Mrs. Diane, as she hugged the oily Santa. The others, very curious, began to greet the first and most surprising Christmas gift. Little by little, the silence turned into questions and requests to dance. Mr. Woods' Santa had become the center of attention, and much of the Christmas celebration consisted of playing and dancing with it. No one cared to find out who had put him there. Only when the sun began to rise and Santa's vibrating butt started to smoke, people left the Big House. They gave it all. So much so that even the wine bottles were fuller than anyone's soul who was there. Except for Mr. Woods. He was just as fine he had arrived. “It's been a pleasure laughing at Christmas with you two,” nodded Mrs. Diane, bidding farewell to the potbellied duo. “Don't miss us. See you soon!” joked the gardener, nudging the robot. “Technically, it would be 365 days later,” Santa added mechanically. The slow, cheerful pace of these two not only made the walk home longer, but also allowed the most curious of all the Christmas enthusiasts, Dora, to follow them in secret. Hiding behind every bush or Christmas inflatable brought relief to the little girl's heart. The adrenaline made her feel like every part of her body was beating. It was a top moment of her life, because she didn't know where Santa slept. “I saw Santa riding a polar bear at the North Pole,” Dora imagined herself bragging to her classmates when the holidays were over. However, not long after, Dora realized that Santa actually never left on a flying sleigh. Instead, he continued on and entered Mr. Woods' rented house. Seeing this, she remained silent and still for a moment, but then it occurred to her that she could continue spying through the backyard door. It was the best idea she could have had because it was ajar, and she immediately saw the Christmas duo talking in the middle of the living room. “It was a good performance, silly machine, but sometimes you had to feign insanity, just like they do, but always," Mr. Woods complained to his gift. “Master, it was too much information,” apologized the robotic Santa. “This Christmas will be much chaos,” Mr. Woods exploded with a malicious laugh. “It's about time, master. That's why you created me,” Santa quickly agreed with the gardener. Poor Dora was speechless as she contemplated such a conspiracy. She could barely move. But she came to her senses when she heard footsteps approaching. She darted out the way she had come in, stumbling several times in the snowy yard. “Sir, did you leave a hat like mine behind the sofa?” asked the mechanical Santa. “I don't remember making two!” replied Mr. Woods, annoyed. “Do you know what that means?” he asked before tearing the hat. “What?” “That you start with the last Christmas now,” roared the gardener with a frown. Then, the one who had been charming on Christmas Eve began to sharpen knives, mini bombs, and saws to create the worst Christmas ever. The residents of Blueberry Town awoke on the morning of December 25 amidst screams and cries. To their horror, they watched as Santa himself tore open the gifts they had received and exploded the inflatables that decorated their homes. Suddenly, the Christmas spark was nothing but black smoke and chaos. “My granddaughter was right,” lamented Mrs. Diane, almost choking back tears as she confirmed the destruction of Christmas in the town. “How could our long-time gardener be such a beast?” wondered Yule, confused, along with the others in the Big House. “What now?” asked some. “Even the police seem to be helpless,” replied others. “I won't let him break my Brownie,” sobbed Dora as she hugged her teddy bear behind her grandmother. “I have just come up with something as crazy as all this,” exclaimed Mr. Yule triumphantly. It wouldn't be long before that evil Christmas creation arrived where it had been the most pleasant place some hours ago. Yule hurried to explain his plan to stop it, while through the windows they could see how every house out was being stripped of its decorations and gifts. “Do you think this will really work?” asked a very nervous man among the crowd. “It'll be a major show,” replied Yule with a smile. Perhaps a dozen people, including Mrs. Diane and Dory, came out of the Big House with several firecrackers in hand, aiming them at Santa. It was Yule, in total fascination, who soon lit the fuses of each one with the hurry that they all take off at the same time. “It's our Christmas, not yours!” shouted Yule just before ordering everyone to release the shaking firecrackers aimed at the evil robot. The destructive Santa managed to stop some of the firecrackers that were coming his way, but then there were so many that, with his oil, caused multiple colorful, funny explosions in the streets of Blueberry Town, scattering around all kinds of mechanical pieces like snowflakes. A celebration even bigger than Christmas Eve enveloped all the town's residents as they confirmed that the nightmare was gone forever. “Grandma, Grandma, we beat Santa!” Dory jumped up and down with excitement. “Yes, sweetie, but there's still one thing left to do,” Mrs. Diane said to her granddaughter before starting to walk toward the end of town. “You're not leaving here until you tell us why you created such an abomination,” insisted Mrs. Diane, accompanied by more and more people from Blueberry Town, inside Mr. Woods' rented house. “You see,” sighed the gardener deeply, “I apologize, even though it's not enough,” he trembled. “Repairing the town will definitely cost more than an apology,” said Yule, looking at the others. “You never gave me anything for keeping your town like a royal garden all these years,” shouted Mr. Woods, with his face as red as a tomato. “Food, clothes, plants!” people replied. “No! Nobody likes gifts like that. I wanted something unique. You never made my Christmas special, so I decided that yours would never be again with the creation of my Santa,” confessed the gardener, crying. Mrs. Diane took a few steps forward and placed a hand on the heartbroken man before lifting his face. “You should have asked, dear.” “Damn, thank goodness it's me who makes investments, and not guys like this!” added Yule. “Look, I'll give you my Brownie to keep you company every night,” offered Dora, who was drying Mr. Woods' cheeks. The neighbors finally accepted his apology with a long, silent hug and agreed to keep the gardener. Several days passed until the new year arrived, and with it, a new Blueberry Town, which Mr. Woods himself took care of cleaning and fixing under the special supervision of many children and Brownie.

Sorpresas de Navidad

—Es un regalo enorme, señor Woods, ¿qué será?— vociferó Dory, la nieta de la señora Diane, dando brinquitos allá y aquí.
—Espero que sea mi nueva casa— bromeó el jardinero de Pueblo Arándano. Los demás rieron en medio de un ambiente lleno de villancicos, decoraciones navideñas y comida recién horneada en la Gran Casa. Algunos tomaban fotos, otros simplemente conversaban, pero la mayoría yacía expectante frente al gran árbol de Navidad para ver qué regalo había para cada quien. —Estoy seguro es la podadora que siempre quisiste, grandulón—comentó ebrio Yule, el emprendedor, sobre el ansioso señor Woods. —Ábrela ya— gritaron varios niños del pueblo. —Primero leeré en voz alta quien fue tan generoso conmigo—aclaró el señor Woods, antes de darse cuenta no había tarjeta de regalo. El jardinero no se detuvo, pero cuando estuvo a punto de rasgar el envoltorio de Rudolph, éste se abrió como si explotara, y de allí emergió un santa tamaño real que dejó a todos mudos. El silencio fue como una bola de nieve que fue callando a los vecinos uno tras otro. Este inesperado regalo no sólo era grande y esculpido en finas piezas mecánicas, sino que tenía vida propia. Dos pasos y saludaba. Hacía un bailecito con la panza y se reía. —Vamos, muchachos, es Navidad, ¿dónde están sus sonrisas?— preguntó jocoso el regalo que dejó a todos boquiabiertos. —¡Qué maravilla!—reaccionó el señor Woods después de unos minutos viendo a su gracioso compañero. —Un nuevo integrante de Pueblo Arándano ha llegado— anunció la señora Diane, mientas abrazaba al Santa aceitoso. Los demás, muy curiosos, empezaron a saludar al primer y más sorprendente regalo de Navidad. De a poco el silencio se fue transformando en preguntas y pedidos de baile. El Santa del señor Woods se había convertido en el centro de atención y mucha de la celebración navideña consistió en jugar y bailar con Santa. A nadie le importó averiguar quién lo había puesto ahí. Sólo cuando empezó a despuntar el sol y el trasero vibrador de Santa echó humo, la gente salió de la Gran Casa. Lo dieron todo. Tanto así que hasta las botellas de vino estaba más completas que cualquiera que salí de ahí. Excepto el señor Woods. Él estaba como había llegado. —Ha sido un placer reír en Navidad con ustedes dos—asintió la señora Diane, despidiendo al dúo panzón. —No nos extrañen. Nos vemos pronto— bromeó el jardinero codeando al robot. —Técnicamente serían 365 días después— añadió mecánicamente Santa. El paso lento y risueño de estos dos no sólo hizo más extenso el camino de regreso a casa, sino que además permitió que la más curiosa de todos los navideños, Dora, los siguiera en secreto. Cada arbusto o muñeco inflable servía de alivio para el corazoncito de la niña. La adrenalina la hacía sentir que cada parte de su cuerpo latía. Era el momento cumbre de su vida, porque ella no sabía dónde dormía Santa. —Yo vi a Santa andar en oso polar en el Polo Norte— se imaginaba Dora presumiendo a sus compañeras de clase cuando acabaran las vacaciones. Sin embargo, no mucho después, Dora se dio cuenta que Santa nunca se fue en un trineo volador. En cambio, siguió y entró en la casa alquilada del señor Woods. Al ver esto, ella permaneció en silencio e inmóvil un momento, pero después se le ocurrió que podía seguir espiando por la puerta del patio. Fue la mejor idea que pudo tener porque estaba entreabierta, y enseguida vio al dúo navideño conversando en medio de la sala. —Fue una buena actuación, máquina tonta, pero a veces debías fingir demencia, tal como ellos hacen, pero siempre—le reclamó el señor Woods a su “regalo”. —Señor, era demasiada información—se disculpó el Santa robotizado. —Demasiado será el caos en el que convertiremos esta Navidad—explotó en una carcajada malévola el señor Woods. —Ya es hora, amo, para eso me has creado—concordó rápidamente Santa con el jardinero. La pobre Dora quedó sin palabras al contemplar semejante confabulación. A penas podía moverse. Mas volvió en sí al sentir que se aproximaban unos pasos. Ella salió disparada como una bala por donde había entrado, no sin tropezarse varias veces con la nieve en el patio. —Señor, ¿ha dejado un gorrito como el mío detrás del sofá?—preguntó el Santa mecánico. —¡No recuerdo haber hecho dos!— respondió disgustado el señor Woods. —¿Sabes lo que significa?— cuestionó antes de romper el gorrito. —¿Qué? —Que comiences con las últimas Navidades—bramó el jardinero con ceño fruncido. Entonces, el que había sido encanto durante Nochebuena, comenzó a perfilar navajas, mini bombas y sierras para crear las peores Navidades de todas. Entre gritos y llantos, los vecinos de Pueblo Arándano despertaban en plena mañana de 25 de diciembre. Con horror, veían como el mismísimo Santa rasgaba los regalos recibidos y explotaba los muñecos inflables que decoraban las casas. De pronto, el brillo navideño era sólo humo negro y caos. —Era cierto lo que había dicho mi nietica—lamentó casi ahogada la señora Diane cuando confirmó la destrucción de la Navidad en el pueblo. —¿Cómo ha podido ser nuestro jardinero de años semejante bestia?— se cuestionaba confundido Yule con los demás en la Gran Casa. —¿Y ahora qué?—preguntaban algunos. —Hasta la policía parece que quedó desarmada— respondían otros. —Yo no voy a dejar que rompa a mi Brownie— sollozaba Dora mientras abrazaba a su osito de peluche detrás de su abuela. —Se me ocurre algo igual de loco que todo esto—exclamó triunfante el señor Yule de pronto. Faltaba poco para que aquella malvada creación navideña llegara adorable adonde hasta hace no mucho había sido la más agradable sorpresa. Yule se apuraba en explicar su plan para detenerlo mientras que por las ventanas se veía cómo cada casa quedaba sin adornos ni regalos. —¿Crees que esto realmente funcione?—preguntó un hombre muy nervioso entre la gente. —Será un espectáculo—respondió sonriendo Yule. Quizás una docena de personas, incluyendo a la señora Diane y Dory, salieron de la Gran Casa con varios cohetones en mano apuntando a Santa. Fue Yule, en fascinación total, que pronto encendió las mechas de cada uno con la premura de que todos despegaran al mismo tiempo. —¡Es nuestra Navidad, no la tuya!—gritó Yule justo antes de ordenar a todos que soltaran los vibrantes cohetones dirigidos al malvado robot. El Santa destructor logró detener algunos de los cohetones que llegaban hasta él, pero ya luego fueron muchos los que con su aceite hicieron múltiples explosiones graciosamente coloridas en las calles de Pueblo Arándano, que todo tipo de piecitas mecánicas, como si de copos de nieve se tratase. Una celebración más grande que la de Nochebuena envolvió a todos los residentes del pueblo al confirmas que aquella pesadilla había desaparecido para siempre. —¡Abuela, abuela, le ganamos a Santa!— saltaba de emoción Dory por todo el lugar. —Si, hijita, pero falta una cosa aún— cargó la señora Diane a su nieta antes de comenzar a caminar hacia el final del pueblo. —No te moverás de aquí hasta que digas por qué creaste semejante aberración—insistía la señora Diane, acompañada por más y más gente de Pueblo Arándano, dentro de la casa rentada del señor Woods. —Verán— suspiraba hondo el jardinero— yo pido perdón, aunque no baste— temblaba él. —Definitivamente reparar el pueblo costará más que un perdón—dijo Yule mirando a los demás. —Ustedes nunca me regalaron nada por mantener su pueblo como un jardín imperial todos estos años—gritó con cara de tomate el señor Woods. —¡Comida, ropa, una planta!—respondía la gente. —¡No! Nadie gusta de semejantes regalos. Quería algo único. Nunca hicieron mi Navidad algo especial, así que decidí que la de ustedes más nunca lo fuera con la creación de mi Santa—confesó llorando el jardinero. La señora Diane dio unos pasos adelante y posó una mano sobre el desconsolado hombre, antes de levantar su cara. —Lo hubieses pido, querido. —¡Rayos, menos mal que soy yo quien toma, y no tipos como este!—agregó Yule. —Mira, te regalo a mi Brownie para que te acompañe cada noche—ofreció Dora, quien secaba las mejillas del señor Woods. Los vecinos terminaron por aceptar el perdón con gran y silencioso abrazo, y convinieron la permanencia del jardinero. De este modo, varios días pasaron hasta que el nuevo año llegó, y con él, un nuevo Pueblo Arándano, quien el mismo señor Woods se encargaba de limpiar y reparar con la supervisión especial de muchos niños y Brownie.
