Este 2 de octubre se cumplieron 10 años de que un grupo de cubanos llegaran a Sierra Leona como parte de la Brigada médica Cubana para combatir el ébola, a mi mente como cada año llegan recuerdos de nuestra estancia en aquel pequeño país de Africa, de todas la vivencias que tuve y de la manera en que enfrentamos esa epidemia ayudando a ese sufrido pueblo a sanar al menos de esa terrible enfermedad del virus del ébola. >This October 2 marked 10 years since a group of Cubans arrived in Sierra Leone as part of the Cuban Medical Brigade (BMC) to combat Ebola. (foto tomada por mi) Recuerdo el rechazo a nuestra presencia allí, un artículo en el periódico local donde no se decía nada bueno de nuestra estancia allí, y se preguntaban porqué no comenzábamos a prestar la atención a los pacientes, preocupaciones estás que supuestamente tenían la población y que de ninguna manera correspondía a nosotros contestar porque el pa+is no tenía creada las condiciones para ello, pues no existían los Centros de Tratamiento de Ébola (CTE) aún; lo más reconfortante de todo esto y lo que más nos llenó de orgullo y satisfacción, es que esas opiniones cambiaron completamente cuando comenzamos a trabajar el día 4 de noviembre de 214, que fue la inauguración del CTE Kerry Town, donde los enfermeros y médicos cubanos realizaron una labor extraordinaria, mostrando al mundo cómo se debía atender a un paciente infestado con ébola, lo que provocó la admiración y el respeto de todos los que tuveron la posibilidad de trabajar con nosotros, este comportamiento humanista y profesional provocó que se cambiaran todos los protocolos que hasta ese instante tenían los directivos de la OMS (WHO), que consistía básicamente en la observación,- literal- del paciente y nada más; reportar sí mejoraba o empeoraba y anotar ese comportamiento. >I remember the rejection of our presence there, an article in the local newspaper that said nothing good about our stay there, and they wondered why we did not begin to provide care to the patients, concerns that supposedly the population had and that in no way were our responsibility to answer because the country had not created the conditions for it, since the Ebola Treatment Centers (CTE) did not yet exist; The most comforting thing about all this and what filled us with the most pride and satisfaction is that those opinions changed completely when we began to work on November 4, 2014, which was the inauguration of the CTE Kerry Town, where Cuban nurses and doctors did an extraordinary job, showing the world how to care for a patient infested with Ebola, which provoked the admiration and respect of all those who had the opportunity to work with us. (Foto de mi archivo personal) Son innumerables los recuerdos de 6 meses y medio enfrentando la enfermedad, motivados todos por la certeza del gran riesgo que corríamos cada segundo allí, luchando contra una enfermedad altamente letal sin apenas conocer ni tener idea de como tratarla, y donde todos crecimos como seres humanos, y recuerdo que la valentía y el humanismo de los médicos y enfermeros cubanos no conoce límites, pues fuero ellos - Ilodis y Juan Andrés, un intensivista y un ginecostetra, los únicos que se atrevieron a realizar un parto por Césarea a una paciente infestada con ébola, y luego atendieron y dieron seguimiento a la madre y la bebé, hasta que la primera falleció, y dieron dinero de lo poco que tenían para que le siguieran el tratamiento con antibióticos a la bebé, este comportamiento los pude ver y apreciar en cada uno de os integrantes de la BMC.
