Starting to read The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron

A course in discovering and rescuing your own creativity.

The year is starting, and I thought it would be a great idea to find a challenge to take on. I've had this popular book in PDF format for a few months, and I'm going to give it a try during these hot summer days. Here's a review of the first chapter. * * *

The Help of the Swamp Princess (Doechii)

Today, January 12, 2026, I'm starting to read "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron. It was all the rage a few years ago, but I only recently came across it recommended by the American rapper Doechii. In an interview, she mentioned that she was experiencing creative block, and this book helped her compose her music. Later, she recorded a Tiny Desk Concert that went viral and even won a Grammy. As I understand it, the book proposes a series of weekly exercises, plus "morning pages" and "dates with the artist." Basically, I'm reading that a 12-week course is being proposed, requiring a small commitment of one or two hours a day, to achieve enormous results. So, let's give it a try and share the process here. * * *

Two fundamental tools are proposed:

Morning Pages

I commit to writing three pages of anything by hand each day, as soon as I wake up, to empty my consciousness. They don't have to be perfect. Just putting my hand to the paper. It's a gradual process, but hopefully, I'll be able to better understand my thoughts and needs, and identify my main problems and concerns. I believe they will be the beginning of communicating my dreams, dissatisfactions, and hopes to the universe (as well as to myself).

Dates with My Artist

These are weekly solitary excursions of about two hours, focused on nurturing inner creativity, seeking inspiration, and developing courage. It's about going for a walk, like a game, to replenish my creative reserves. Nourishing my ecosystem with new sensory images. I need to focus more on the search for the mystery than on the knowledge I lack. For example, what would happen if I combined these three chords? What new sound would emerge?

Contract

In the first chapter, we are already asked to sign a Contract with Creativity, committing ourselves to writing and embarking on this intense encounter with our own creative source. It confronts us with some basic negative beliefs we tend to have (in my case, number 11: My work will be bad and I'll look like an idiot). And it helps us replace them with positive affirmations such as: >

"I, __________ (your name), am a brilliant and prolific bassist (painter, poet, or whatever you are)."

"I am a channel of divine creativity and my work comes to fruition."

"I, __________ , have true talent."

Upon saying this, some opposing entity will jump up within us, seeking to undermine our confidence, sowing doubts and even resorting to insults. You have to learn to recognize that inner enemy. The first chapter ends with a wide range of tasks that involve incorporating the chosen affirmations into your journal, along with other exercises for "time travel." * * *

Finding My Synchronicity

So far, I'm enjoying the book. It has a fairly simple, straightforward writing style, with ideas that are easy to grasp, and it quotes many other artists. The exercises are simple and basic, but this is a good way for me to start, because I was feeling very unmotivated. My commitment now is to continue reading and writing every day, using this rescue course as the initial tool on my creative journey.

Tuvo su furor hace algunos años, pero a mi me llegó recientemente recomendado por la artista Doechii, rapera estadounidense. Que en una entrevista contaba que estaba bloqueada creativamente y este libro la ayudó a componer su música, y tiempo después grabó un Tiny Desk que se hizo viral y ganó un Grammy también. Según tengo entendido el libro propone una serie de ejercicios semanales, más las "páginas matutinas" y las "citas con el artista". Básicamente estoy leyendo que se propone un curso de 12 semanas, un pequeño compromiso de una o dos horas por día, para lograr enormes resultados. Así que vamos a probarlo, y compartir el proceso por aquí. * * * Electricidad espiritual: Los principios básicos ----------------------------------------------- Se proponen dos herramientas fundamentales:

Las páginas matutinas

Me comprometo a 3 paginas diarias manuscritas de lo que sea, apenas despertarse para vaciar el flujo de conciencia. No tienen que ser perfectas. Solo poner en movimiento la mano sobre el papel. Es un proceso progresivo, pero que con suerte podré conocer mejor mis pensamientos, necesidades, e identificar mis principales problemas y preocupaciones. Creo que serán el principio de comunicar al universo (como a mi mismo) mis sueños, insatisfacciones y esperanzas.

Las citas con mi Artista

Son excursiones solitarias semanales de dos horas aproximadamente, enfocado en alimentar la creatividad interna, buscando inspiración y desarrollando valentía. Es salir a dar una vuelta, y que sea como un juego, que me cargue de reservas creativas. Nutrir mi ecosistema de nuevas imágenes sensoriales. Es preciso concentrarme más en la búsqueda del misterio que en los conocimientos que me faltan. Por ejemplo, que pasaría si combino estos tres acordes?. Que nueva sonoridad aparecerá?. ### Contrato En el primer capitulo ya nos hace firmar con nosotros mismos un Contrato con la Creatividad, para comprometernos a escribir y a embarcarnos en este encuentro intenso con la propia fuente creativa. Nos confronta con algunas creencias negativas básicas que solemos tener, (en mi caso la numero 11: Mi trabajo será malo y pareceré un idiota). Y nos ayuda a reemplazarlas con afirmaciones positivas como: > #### «Yo, \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ (tu nombre), soy un bajista (pintor, poeta o lo que seas) brillante y prolífico». > > #### «Soy un canal de la creatividad divina y mi trabajo llega a buen puerto». > > #### «Yo, \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ , tengo un talento verdadero». Al decir esto, saltará dentro nuestro alguna entidad que se opone, y buscara minar la confianza, sembrando dudas y hasta con insultos. Hay que saber reconocer ese enemigo interno. Finaliza el primer capitulo con una amplia serie de tareas que implican incorporar al diario las afirmaciones elegidas y otros ejercicios para "viajar en el tiempo". ### Buscando mi Sincronía Hasta ahora me esta gustando el libro, tiene un estilo de escritura bastante sencillo, sin adornos, con ideas muy fáciles de asimilar, y citando muchas frases de otros artistas; los ejercicios son simples, básicos pero esta bien para mi empezar así, porque venía muy desmotivado. Mi compromiso es ahora continuar con la lectura y la escritura todos los días, usando este curso de rescate como herramienta inicial de mi camino creativo.
