If pollination is successful and pollen tubes grow down in style, ethylene is produced which causes the petals to collapse. This is a very useful phenomenon; in most members of apiaceae it can take several weeks before someone gets a feeling like whether pollination has succeeded.

Here, however, the petals do not collapse within 24 hours of a successful pollinator, but wither and present the same threat of rot in wet conditions, which is actually more likely as polyanthus flowers before in often wetter weather.

This helps stop the fungus that forms at the bottom of the remaining lower petals and consequently rots the pods before the seeds have time to ripen. In Dianthus it takes about one month from pollination to cooking seeds.
