Y es que, si has visto alguno de los tantos documentales que se pueden encontrar en internet, o que han sido transmitidos en televisión, de seguro has podido comprobar que son muchas las variables a tomar en cuenta al momento de diseñar un rascacielos (y al referirme al diseño no hablo solo de la arquitectura, que siempre sale uno que otro arquitecto por allí ofendido y sintiendo que se le quita protagonismo), de lo que hablo es de la parte estructural. Inicialmente se debe conocer el peso de la estructura, de modo que lo normal es que se calcule primero la superestructura antes de diseñar las fundaciones. Según la forma en que se transmita esta carga hacia las fundaciones, bien sean columnas o muros estructurales. Semi profundas, que son básicamente pilotines y fundaciones profundas, que albergan todos los tipos de pilotes. Y te preguntaras en este momento ¿y como elijen el tipo de fundaciones? Pues muy fácil, según el tipo de suelo. Y es que los rascacielos, por su gran altura son titánicamente pesados, así que el suelo debe ser resistente para soportar ese gran peso. Pero normalmente los suelos no suelen ser tan resistentes, al menos no a nivel superficial, y es por ello que es habitual que este tipo de edificaciones sean soportadas por fundaciones muy profundas. >There are three types of foundations, according to the depth at which they are located, these are: superficial, such as foundation slabs and footings. Cuando el suelo es lo suficientemente resistente se puede construir sobre una fundación superficial como una losa estructural, claro que para evitar que la estructura llegue a volcar se debe diseñar un método de sujeción que ancle al rascacielos muy profundo en el suelo. La diferencia entre estos anclajes y un pilote es que, en el caso del primero, la fuerza que resiste es contraria a la de las fundaciones, es decir, resiste una fuerza ascendente mientras que las fundaciones resisten fuerzas descendentes. Un ejemplo claro de esta combinación de elementos es el Central Park Tower en New York, que se encuentra soportado por una losa de fundación vaciada sobre el resistente suelo de granito sólido de Manhattan y anclada por cables muy profundos que juntos con otros elementos evitan su volcamiento, puedes ver un documental acerca de su construcción usando este enlace. >However, it is not always so. You can see a documentary about its construction using this link Ahora bien, como mencioné antes, estos son casos poco usuales y en la mayoría de casos se terminan usando fundaciones profundas, bien sea que estas lleguen hasta un suelo mucho mas resistente, o que alcancen la resistencia necesaria por medio de la fricción y la consolidación. Este último es el caso del rascacielos Bhur Kalifa de Dubai, que esta construido sobre la arena. Para ello los ingenieros hincaron decenas de pilotes en la arena que no solo generaban la resistencia combinada necesaria para la estructura, sino que consolidaban o compactaban el suelo alrededor de los pilotes mejorando la resistencia del suelo mismo. >Now, as I mentioned before, these are unusual cases and in most cases they end up using deep foundations, either that they reach a much more resistant soil, or that they reach the necessary resistance through friction and consolidation. De seguro deben existir muchos otros ejemplos, sin embargo, el principio será siempre el mismo.
