How's it going fam? Today I bring you a topic on which we all ponder - "ARE WE ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE?". This question has been in our mind since forever right? When I was a kid I always wanted to know the answer to this question thinking what would it be like to make friends with someone living in another universe. I was probably dumb to think of something like this!

OR WAS I?

LET'S DIVE DEEP INTO THE TOPIC TO FIND OUT!

First off, what do we really mean by a MULTIVERSE?

It is just a set of various possible [universes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universe) including the universe which we live in.

Now you must be thinking what on earth do I mean by possible universes. How does [probability](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probability) come into picture while studying this topic which, you might think, has nothing to do with it. If you think so, I'm afraid that you are wrong. Probability, in fact, is the main idea behind this prediction made by the scientists.

This wasn't just a wild idea someone came up with. There's a science behind this formulated postulation. He was the one who first proposed [MANY WORLD INTERPRETATION(MWI)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Many-worlds_interpretation) of [QUANTUM PHYSICS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_physics). This MWI states that there are infinite number of universes which are constantly being created on every decision each and every particle takes due to quantum effects. For a layperson, this simply means that each and every activity you do and each and every action you take creates a new universe. To understand this let me give you a situation -

Let us suppose that while walking a path you reach a [crossroad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersection_(road)) as shown above. You've got two options that you can choose; left or right. At that very moment before your decision, the present universe actually splits into two different universes where in one you decided to go left and the other where you decided to go right..

The idea that governs the idea of the multiverse started with the [BIG BANG](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Bang) when this universe, from a very high-density and high-temperature state, was being made. What triggered this singularity to explode and scatter its constituents into the [3 Dimensional space](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-dimensional_space) is still not known. Apart from this idea, several other ideas have been put forward for years whose results point independently at a multiverse. Not only one but many scientific theories have been proposed. Therefore, at this point of time, we can assume that possibility or certainty of many hidden multiverses is quite likely than not! [Marvel Movie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Studios) fans must be knowing what I am talking about. A film named [Doctor Strange](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Strange_(2016_film)) starring [Benedict Cumberbatch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benedict_Cumberbatch) was released in 2016 which shows us the idea about the other dimensions and other universes. IDEA 'A'; OUR UNIVERSE IS NEVER ENDING

As far as we know and science knows, we believe that [spacetime](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacetime) stretches to a never ending or an [infinite(∞)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinity) distance.
But if the spacetime, whose form the scientists are uncertain of, is infinite than at a point of distance it must start to repeat itself creating an endless [loop](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/loop#English) of it from scratch. If it does so, than its also true that infinite number of our copies exists in this spacetime continuum.
This means that if you look far enough, it is likely that you will find an another version of 'YOU' which might be doing the same thing that you are right now or may be someone complete opposite of you. This is the idea of infinite universes.

IDEA 'B' ; INFLATION OF UNIVERSES

This is a theory first proposed by [Alexander Vilenkin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Vilenkin); a cosmologist of [Tufts University](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tufts_University) which is present in [Massachusetts](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts), [United States](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States). This theory proposed tells us that the [universe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universe) is continuously inflating like a balloon after the big bang.
But, according to Alexander Vilenkin, some pockets of space time stops inflating while others continue to inflate at a rapid rate. This inflation an non-inflation of some pockets of universes gives rise to what is known as bubble universes. [Paul Steinhardt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Steinhardt) introduced the first model of Eternal Inflation in 1983.
Our universe is one of the non-inflating universes. We know this because our universe contains [STARS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star), [PLANETS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet), [GALAXIES](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy), etc. But most of our space still contains vast bubbles of universe which are still inflating, within which the [fundamental laws of physics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_law) could be very different than that of ours and very strange.
Also, it has been thought, that when these bubble universes collide in [space](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space), they create some openings or [portals](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portals_in_fiction) to their likewise universes.

IDEA 'C' ; STRING THEORY'S IDEA OF PARALLEL UNIVERSES

[Princeton University's](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princeton_University) [Paul Steinhardt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Steinhardt) and [Neil Turok](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Turok) of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in [Ontario](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario), [Canada](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada) proposed an idea what is known as PARALLEL UNIVERSE. This idea has been raised by the aid of [STRING THEORY](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/String_theory).
There may be many more [dimensions](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimension) in our known world with only 4 dimensions; three of [Cartesian's](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian) length breadth and height and one of [time](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time) fused together to form spacetime. So, having our own 4-dimensional [BRANE](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brane), other 4-dimensional branes may be floating in the higher dimensions.
String theory is directly linked to the thought that our universe is one of the numerous slabs floating in the higher dimensions of space. You can read more about it in the book named [The Hidden Reality](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hidden_Reality) written by [Brian Greene](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Greene).
A deeper thought into this theory suggests that these brane universes are not necessarily always parallel and out of reach. Sometimes, they might slam into one another causing repeated big bangs over and over again.

IDEA 'D' ; AN INDEPENDENTLY EXISTING UNIVERSE

[Mathematics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics) is not what you think it is. It may not just be a mere tool for describing the universe, or multiverse imma say, but a whole lot of reality itself. Our observations in this universe which we live in may just be the imperfect perceptions of its true mathematical nature.
So if this is true, then a particular mathematical function which describes our universe may not be the only option. There may be thousands of other mathematical functions describing other universes as well giving rise to the possibilities of multiverses.
