**Greetings, Hive!** It's true that due to the difficulties I've had to acquire last generation consoles I've been a bit inactive in the gaming world, however that doesn't mean I've been away since I've always kept up to date with new releases and trends in the industry. Something I saw with concern was that more and more developers were joining the trend of selling "incomplete" games with the intention of completing the experience through downloadable content, or even worse, the infamous practice of loot boxes. In addition to this it was also uncommon to see games that focused on the single player experience, something that also saddened me because I've always been a gamer who enjoys single player much more, and mind you, it's not that I don't like multiplayer experiences, but I'm just not passionate about them. In the midst of all this, in 2018 was born - or rather, reborn - a franchise that we had not heard from since 2013: God of War, and to everyone's surprise we were facing a reconceptualization both at a narrative and playable level, a work that came to challenge current trends, which against all odds bet on offering a single player experience that positioned itself as one of the best titles of its generation. Recently, thanks to a borrowed PlayStation 4 and a copy of this game, I had the opportunity to experience for myself the journey of Kratos and Atreus through the 9 worlds of Yggdrasil. So without any further ado, join me in kicking off 2022 in style with a review of one of the greatest games ever created, God of War. God of War's development began in 2014, the team in charge of the production was Santa Monica Studios, who were present in the saga since its first installment, and the direction was in charge of Cory Barlog who is the creative director of Santa Monica and also who directed God of War (2005) and God of War II. The game was officially revealed during Sony's press conference at E3 2016, there was shown a trailer where we could see many differences respect to what the saga had us used to; first of all Kratos no longer had his iconic Blades of Chaos, this time around his using an ice axe with powers similar to the Mjolnir, Thor's hammer.

Both Kratos' physical appearance and personality had also changed, he now had a pronounced beard and looked much calmer; the game's perspective had changed from a top camera angle that focuses on the action to one positioned behind Kratos' shoulder, this would radically affect the way combat was executed; and last but not least, Kratos was now accompanied by Atreus, his son and co-protagonist of the story. God of War was released on April 20, 2018 and was a resounding success in both sales and reviews, quickly positioning itself as the best-selling game of the saga and PlayStation 4 tittle.

After his long journey in search of revenge against the Gods of Olympus, Kratos has decided to renounce his life as a god and now lives as a man in the lands of Midgard, where he remarried and had a son. This change is also reflected in the way we play, God of War had been established as a hack-n-slash franchise in all the word’s sense, the camera was usually positioned making an aerial shot that allowed us to appreciate a large part of the scenario where we were, this also helped us to have positioned all the enemies around us, something very necessary considering how multidinary the confrontations could be; The combat was fast and frantic (without reaching the extremes of Devil May Cry) and we had at our disposal an immense amount of combos, weapons, and magic attacks. In this installment we moved to a third-person perspective with a free camera movement, a radical change to say the least; When it comes to combat our main weapon will be the Leviathan Axe.

The axe haves a simple combo system in which by pressing the R1 button we’ll connect a light blow and by pressing R2 we’ll strike a strong blow, we can alternate and combine these features according to the situation and although at first it feels much slower and heavier than for example the Blades of Chaos from the classic saga, the truth is that in no time we will get used to this new combat system, delivering each blow is tremendously satisfying and it is fun to experiment with the possibilities of the combos. Another feature of the axe is that we can throw it and by pressing a button it will return to us, something like the Mjolnir, Thor's hammer, this function is not only useful in combat but also opens the possibility of quite interesting puzzles. If we throw the axe or press the right button on the control pad, we will adopt a melee combat stance, in this combat stance we will stun our enemies faster and when an enemy is stunned, we can perform an instant execution.

For defense we have the Guardian Shield, a large shield that is always equipped on Kratos’ left arm, to use it we just need to press the L1 button and we will immediately adopt a defensive position. However, the shield stands out when we activate it just before receiving an attack; if we have a good timing we will not only avoid taking damage, but we will also reject the attack in question and we will be able to perform a counterattack that will leave the enemy vulnerable. We also have a skill tree in which, through experience points we can unlock new skills for both the axe, melee combat, and the shield. I have to confess that when I saw Atreus in the trailer I felt kinda worried, I thought it was a very risky move and that his presence could hinder the gameplay assuming that his role would be delegated to be protected by his father but fortunately… I was very wrong. Atreus is not only useful but as the fights difficulty increases he becomes an ESSENTIAL part of them, just like Kratos he has his own skill tree in which we can improve and acquire moves to increase his effectiveness and he even has a button dedicated only to him! By pressing square Atreus will shoot an arrow at the enemy or place on which we are looking, this will help us to interrupt enemy actions, attack from a distance, or simply extend the duration of our combos. Throughout the adventure we will gather materials that we can use to forge new pieces of armor and improve our weapons with the help of the dwarves blacksmiths, Brok and Sindri, these new pieces of armor will not only increase our stats but also give us different benefits in the form of passive skills; also as we progress in the plot we will unlock equipment capable of being improved through enchantments that grant additional skills and improvements. Being a linear game is something that doesn’t bothers me at all because, it helps a lot to the overall immersion of the experience and prevents us from feeling overwhelmed in front of an almost infinite world, and also, as we advance in the story and get more resources and skills we can unlock areas to which we previously didn’t have access to. During the journey we will travel through 5 worlds of Norse mythology (6, in theory), each of them with their own designs and objectives to fulfill, in addition, two of these worlds are optional, but if we meet the challenges in them we will unlock the best equipment in the game. I assure you that it will not be an easy task. I have absolutely nothing to say, it’s an audiovisual delicacy in every sense of the sentence. The graphics are the best I have seen in all my experience as a gamer, the textures, expressions, landscapes, the colors, it’s simply breathtaking. The soundtrack is full of powerful music that accompanies with excellence and epicness the climatic moments of the adventure, but also knows when to be melancholic and reflective; as a bonus all the music is recorded by symphony orchestra and the choirs sing in old Nordic. The voice actors are equally phenomenal, there is not a single exception to this, I played it in English and absolutely all the voices perfectly conveyed the feeling of the characters, special mention to Christopher Judge, responsible for giving life to the voice of Kratos. Another point to highlight is the extensive research that was done regarding the Norse mythology and the way it was implemented, every second of gameplay feels like being in school learning something new... but fun. Rarely do we have the joy of being in front of works of this magnitude in the industry, God of War not only aspires to be a good video game but also aims to offer a cinematic narrative experience, it can even be said that it picks the best of the Dark Souls saga in terms of gameplay, combines it with a script in the style of The Last of Us and adapts this to its own characters and mythology, resulting in a video game that is very close to an interactive movie but without forgetting that it is exactly that, a video game. The experience with God of War never feels boring but rather on the contrary, it is addictive and we want to play more, we want to know more about these characters and their world. It can be said that the cast of characters is small; however each and every one of them is invaluable and contributes enough to not miss anything. It is also a game that defied current trends by betting on an experience focused solely and exclusively on the single player, delivering a complete product from the day of its release, without the need to get more money through downloadable content or micropayments. Tormented by the horrors of his past, Kratos undertook his journey to Olympus to take revenge against the gods, however, once consummated that revenge we understand that the path of hatred will not bring more than destruction, and not only destruction in the literal sense of the word but destruction of our being, revenge and desperation to escape the past will only eat us. Everyone, absolutely everyone can start over, we all have the possibility to change, to learn from our mistakes and to be better than our past, and although the things we have done will always be part of us, we cannot allow that to define us. The philosophy of this game is one with which I feel very identified both at a work level and at an emotional level; regarding work I have always been someone very closed to new opportunities, I dedicated so much of my life to music that it seemed meaningless to me the possibility of dedicating myself to something else, I was afraid of change, but then I came to Hive. This platform not only opened doors and gave me a considerable improvement to my economy, but it helped me to reconnect with my lifelong passions, such as video games and anime, it helped me to try something new and get out of my comfort zone and more importantly, it helped me to realize that I can be good at other things. On the emotional side, as everyone, I have had very difficult moments in my life that I have not known how to face, which has led me to make bad decisions that in the end ended up hurting me much more than I expected; I fell into a deep depression and in a circle of self-loathing that almost finished me, however and against all odds (and thanks to professional help) I had the ability to get up and start working on the person I want to become. It hasn’t been easy, it has been a work of years and a lot of effort, I have ups and downs, the ghosts of my past still torment me and make me believe that everything I have done is worthless; however, like Kratos, I have understood that this is a part of me that will always accompany me, but that nowadays I am no longer that man, I am someone better and who had the strength to recognize his mistakes and learn from them, every day of my life I choose to end once and for all with this circle of hatred. **¡Saludos, Hive!** Es cierto que debido a las dificultades que he tenido para adquirir consolas de última generación me he mantenido un poco inactivo en el mundo de los videojuegos, sin embargo eso no quiere decir que haya estado alejado pues, siempre me mantuve al corriente con los nuevos lanzamientos y tendencias de la industria. Algo que vi con preocupación era que cada vez más desarrolladoras se unían a la tendencia de vender juegos “incompletos” con la intención de completar la experiencia a través de contenido descargable, o peor aún, a la infame práctica de las loot boxes. Además de esto también era poco común ver juegos que se enfocaran a la experiencia de un solo jugador, cosa que también me entristecía porque siempre he sido un gamer que disfruta mucho más los single player, y ojo, no es que no me gusten las experiencias multiplayer, pero simplemente no me apasionan. En medio de todo esto en el 2018 nació – o mejor dicho, renació – una franquicia de la que no habíamos vuelto a saber desde el 2013: God of War, y para sorpresa de todo el mundo nos encontrábamos frente a una reconceptualización tanto a nivel narrativo como a nivel jugable, una obra que llegó a desafiar las tendencias actuales, que contra todo pronóstico apostó por ofrecer una experiencia single player que se posicionó como uno de los mejores títulos de su generación. Recientemente, gracias a un PlayStation 4 prestado y una copia de este juego, tuve la oportunidad de experimentar por mí mismo la travesía de Kratos y Atreus a través de los 9 mundos del Yggdrasil. El desarrollo de God of War comenzó en el 2014, el equipo encargado de la producción fue Santa Monica Studios, quienes estuvieron presentes en la saga desde su primera entrega, la dirección estuvo a cargo de Cory Barlog quién es el director creativo de Santa Monica y además dirigió God of War (2005) y God of War II. Tanto el aspecto físico como la personalidad de Kratos habían cambiado, ahora tenía una barba pronunciada y se veía como alguien mucho más calmado; la perspectiva del juego había pasado de una cámara que enfoca la acción desde arriba a posicionarse detrás del hombro de Kratos, esto afectaría radicalmente la manera en la que se ejecutan los combates; y por último pero no menos importante, ahora Kratos estaba acompañado por Atreus, su hijo y coprotagonista de la historia. God of War salió al mercado el 20 de abril del 2018 y fue un éxito rotundo tanto en ventas como en críticas, posicionándose rápidamente como el juego mejor vendido de la saga y de PlayStation 4.

Este cambio también se ve reflejado en la manera que jugamos, God of War se había establecido como un hack-n-slash con todas las de las letras, la cámara usualmente se posicionaba haciendo una toma aérea que nos permitía apreciar una gran parte del escenario donde nos encontrábamos, esto también nos ayudaba a tener posicionados a todos los enemigos a nuestro alrededor cosa muy necesaria considerando lo multidinario que podían llegar a ser los enfrentamientos; el combate era rápido y frenético (sin llegar a los extremos de Devil May Cry) y teníamos a nuestra disposición una inmensa cantidad de combos, armas, y ataques mágicos. En esta entrega pasamos a una perspectiva en tercera persona con un movimiento de cámara libre, un cambio radical por decir menos; a la hora del combate nuestra arma principal será el Hacha de Leviatán.

El hacha tiene un sistema de combos sencillo en el que al presionar el botón R1 daremos un golpe ligero y al presionar R2 daremos un golpe fuerte, podemos alternar y combinar estas características según lo que amerite la situación y aunque en un principio se sienta mucho más lenta y pesada que por ejemplo las Espadas del Caos de la saga clásica, lo cierto es que en nada de tiempo nos acostumbraremos a este nuevo sistema de combate, asestar cada golpe resulta tremendamente satisfactorio y es divertido experimentar con las posibilidades de los combos. Como otra característica del hacha es que podemos arrojarla y al presionar un botón volverá a nosotros, algo así como el Mjolnir, el martillo de Thor, esta función no solo es útil en combate sino que también abre la posibilidad a puzles bastante interesantes. Si arrojamos el hacha o presionamos el botón derecho de la cruceta del mando, adoptaremos una estancia de combate cuerpo a cuerpo, con esta forma de combate aturdiremos más rápido a nuestros enemigos y al aturdirlos, podremos realizar una ejecución instantánea.

Para la defensa contamos con el Escudo del Guardián, un gran escudo que está siempre en el brazo izquierdo de Kratos, para usarlo basta con que presionemos el botón L1 e inmediatamente adoptaremos una posición defensiva. Sin embargo el escudo destaca cuándo lo activamos justamente antes de recibir un ataque; si tenemos un buen timing no solo evitaremos recibir daño, sino que además rechazaremos el ataque en cuestión y podremos realizar un contraataque que dejará vulnerable al enemigo. También contamos con un árbol de habilidades en el que, a través de puntos de experiencia podremos desbloquear nuevas habilidades tanto como para el combate con hacha, cuerpo a cuerpo, y el escudo. En cuanto a escala, los combates serán mucho más reducidos, es decir: no veremos decenas de enemigos al mismo tiempo sino que por el contrario, a lo sumo (y en especial en la recta final de la historia principal) habrán 5 o 6 enemigos atacándonos, eso sí, menos enemigos no es sinónimo de fácil, yo lo jugué en la dificultad “Dame un desafío” y hubo bastantes composiciones de monstruos que me hicieron doler la cabeza. ![gif7.gif](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/alejandroaldana/23vhUJyxtj6X9sAumsFkPQi1uZjek1w5dQeH8WJZ4UG6X1s2DxhHKcHghnJYM8KkvSzAL.gif)

Tengo que confesar que cuándo vi a Atreus en el tráiler me preocupé un poco, pensaba que era un movimiento muy arriesgado y que su presencia podría entorpecer la jugabilidad al asumir que su rol quedaría delegado a ser protegido por su padre pero… Afortunadamente estaba muy equivocado. Atreus no solo es útil sino que a medida que la dificultad de los combates aumenta se vuelve una parte ESENCIAL en los mismos, al igual que Kratos tiene su propio árbol de habilidades en el cuál podemos mejorar y adquirir movimientos para aumentar su efectividad y es que, ¡incluso tiene un botón dedicado únicamente a él! Al presionar cuadrado Atreus disparará una flecha al enemigo o lugar sobre el que tengamos la mirada, esto nos ayudará a interrumpir las acciones del enemigo, atacar a distancia, o simplemente extender la duración de nuestros combos. A lo largo de la aventura conseguiremos materiales con los que podremos forjar nuevas piezas de armadura y mejorar nuestras armas con los enanos herreros, Brok y Sindri, estas nuevas piezas de armadura no solo aumentarán nuestras estadísticas sino que también nos otorgarán distintos beneficios en forma de habilidades pasivas; asimismo a medida que avancemos en la trama desbloquearemos equipo capaz de ser mejorado a través de encantamientos que otorgan habilidades y mejoras adicionales. Que el juego sea lineal no me molesta en absoluto pues, ayuda mucho a la inmersión general de la experiencia e impide que nos sintamos abrumados frente a un mundo casi infinito, y además, a medida que avancemos en la historia y consigamos más recursos y habilidades podremos desbloquear zonas a las que previamente no teníamos acceso. Durante la travesía viajaremos a través de 5 mundos de la mitología nórdica (6, en teoría), cada uno de ellos sus propios diseños y objetivos a cumplir, además, dos de estos mundos son opcionales, pero si cumplimos con los desafíos que hay en ellos desbloquearemos los mejores equipos del juego. Eso sí, les aseguro que no será nada fácil. Los gráficos son los mejores que YO he visto en toda mi experiencia como gamer, las texturas, las expresiones, los paisajes, los colores, es sencillamente impresionante. Con respecto al sonido del juego pasa lo mismo, el soundtrack está lleno de música poderosa que acompaña con excelencia y epicidad los momentos climáticos de la aventura, pero también sabe en qué momento ser melancólica y reflexiva; como dato extra toda la música está grabada por orquesta sinfónica y los coros cantan en nórdico antiguo. Los actores de voz son igual de fenomenales, no hay una sola excepción a esto, yo lo jugué en inglés y absolutamente todas las voces transmitían a la perfección el sentimiento de los personajes, mención especial a Christopher Judge, responsable de darle vida a la voz de Kratos. Otro punto a destacar es la extensa investigación que se realizó con respecto a la mitología nórdica y la manera en la que fue implementada, cada segundo de juego se siente como estar en la escuela aprendiendo algo nuevo… pero divertido. Pocas veces en la industria tenemos la dicha de estar frente a obras de esta magnitud, God of War no solo aspira a ser un buen videojuego sino que además apunta a ofrecer una experiencia narrativa cinematográfica, puede decirse incluso que recoge lo mejor de la saga de Dark Souls en cuanto a lo jugable, lo combina con un guión al estilo de The Last of Us y adapta esto a sus propios personajes y mitología, dando como resultado un videojuego que se acerca mucho a una película interactiva pero sin olvidarse de que es eso, un videojuego. La experiencia con God of War nunca se siente aburrida sino más bien por el contrario, resulta adictiva y queremos jugar más, queremos saber más de estos personajes y su mundo. Se puede decir que el cast de personajes es pequeño, sin embargo todos y cada uno son valiosísimos y aportan lo suficiente como para no echar nada de menos. Es además un videojuego que desafió las tendencias actuales apostando por una experiencia centrada única y exclusivamente en el single player, entregando un producto completo desde el día de su salida, sin la necesidad de sacar más dinero a través de contenido descargable o micropagos. Atormentado por los horrores de su pasado, Kratos emprendió su viaje hacia el Olimpo para tomar venganza contra los dioses, sin embargo, una vez consumada esa venganza entendemos que el camino del odio no va a traer más que destrucción, y no solo destrucción en el sentido literal de la palabra sino, destrucción de nuestro ser, la venganza y la desesperación por huir del pasado solo nos va a carcomer. Todos, absolutamente todos podemos comenzar de nuevo, todos tenemos la posibilidad de cambiar, de aprender de nuestros errores y de ser mejores que nuestro pasado, y aunque las cosas que hayamos hecho siempre serán parte de nosotros, no podemos permitir que eso nos defina. La filosofía de este juego es una con la que me siento muy identificado tanto a nivel laboral como a nivel emocional; respecto a lo laboral siempre fui alguien muy cerrado a nuevas oportunidades, dediqué tanto tiempo de mi vida a la música que me parecía un sinsentido la posibilidad de dedicarme a otra cosa, tenía miedo al cambio, pero entonces llegué a Hive. Esta plataforma no solo me abrió las puertas y le dio una mejoría considerable a mi economía, sino que me ayudo a reconectar con pasiones de toda mi vida como los videojuegos y el anime, me ayudo a intentar algo nuevo y salir de mi zona de confort y más importante aún, que puedo ser bueno en otras cosas. Con respecto a lo emocional, pues como todos, he tenido momentos muy difíciles en mi vida que no he sabido afrontar, lo que me ha llevado a tomar malas decisiones que al final terminaron perjudicándome muchísimo más de lo que esperaba; caí en una profunda depresión y en un círculo de autodesprecio que casi acaba conmigo, sin embargo y contra todo pronóstico (y gracias a ayuda profesional) tuve la capacidad de levantarme y de comenzar a trabajar en la persona que quiero llegar a ser. No ha sido nada sencillo, ha sido un trabajo de años y mucho esfuerzo, tengo altibajos, los fantasmas de mi pasado aún me atormentan y me hacen creer que todo lo que hecho no vale de nada; no obstante, al igual que Kratos, he entendido que esa es una parte de mí que siempre me acompañará, pero que hoy en día yo ya no soy ese hombre, soy alguien mejor y que tuvo la fortaleza de reconocer sus errores y aprender de ellos, todos los días de mi vida elijo terminar de una vez por todas con este círculo de odio.
