District 9 is one of the most impressive films I have ever watched in my life because of the complexity of its story, the depth of its characters and the verisimilitude of its setting, that’s why today I bring to you an analysis of this masterpiece of contemporary science fiction.

The story of District 9 is set in Johannesburg, where for 20 years alien creatures referred to as prawns have been confined in a ghetto exclusively for these beings, however the government has decided to move them to District 10, which is a concentration camp disguised with lies to prevent the city from continuing to be affected by the alien population. The operation of this transfer is led by Wikus van de Merwe, an office worker who like everyone else in the city, has nothing but contempt for the prawns and does not believe in the humanitarian reasons that serve as an excuse to evict them from District 9.

This film manages to give a complete twist to the established conventions of the alien movies subgenre, here contrary to its traditional representation in the history of cinema as hostile and technologically superior forces, the aliens are put in a position of victims and not only that, the traditional space invaders are represented as a kind of immigrants and refugees.

One of the decisions made by the director to reinforce this twist to the subgenre is to strip the human characters of human characteristics such as compassion, honesty or fraternization and instead give them to the alien creatures. In the prawns we find elements such as family feeling or friendship, while in the human characters we find betrayal, distrust, disrespect for life and their priorities are selfish.

La historia de Sector 9 nos sitúa en Johannesburgo, donde por 20 años unas criaturas alienígenas referidas como los langostinos, han estado recluidas en un gueto exclusivo para estos seres, sin embargo el gobierno ha decidió trasladarlos al sector 10, el cual es un campo de concentración disfrazado con mentiras para evitar que la ciudad continúe siendo afectada por la población extraterrestre. La operación de este traslado está liderada por Wikus van de Merwe, un oficinista que al igual que todos en la ciudad solo siente desprecio por los langostinos y no cree en las razones humanitarias que sirven como escusa para desalojarlos del Sector 9.

La película logra dar un giro total a las convenciones establecidas en el subgénero de las cintas sobre extraterrestres, aquí contrario a su representación tradicional en la historia de cine como fuerzas hostiles y tecnológicamente superiores, los alienígenas son puestos en una posición de víctimas y no solo eso, los tradicionales invasores espaciales son ahora representados como inmigrantes y refugiados.

Una de las decisiones que toma el director para reforzar este giro al subgénero, es despojar de características humanas a los personajes humanos como la compasión, la honestidad o la fraternización para más bien otórgaselas a las criaturas alienígenas. En los langostinos encontramos elementos como el sentimiento familiar o la amistad, mientras que en los personajes humanos encontramos traición, desconfianza, irrespeto por la vida y sus prioridades son egoístas.

District 9 could be seen also as an allegory to the segregationist past of South Africa, to make the film the South African director and screenwriter Neill Blomkamp took as a starting point, the experiences lived in South Africa during the Apartheid era, witnessing the strong racist and inhumane measures taken against the black communities of Johannesburg, where they were forced to live in places delimited specifically for them, forbidding the right to vote or to maintain affectionate relationships with white people.

The use of the documentary format seemed to me an excellent decision to open the film, thanks to this narrative tool the film's intention to denounce acquires strength, to allow us to take more seriously what we see on screen. When South African citizens express their discomfort and annoyance regarding the prawns, their words can be interpreted as the discontent and rejection of certain people to immigrants in any place of the world, showing it as something dehumanized or that does not require attention and not as the crisis they actually represent.

One of the details that most strikes me about the film, is the fact that humans have managed to understand the language of the prawns but instead of taking this as an opportunity to meet their needs, humans decide to treat them as scum by confining them in District 9. They understand their languages, but it is clear that this is not enough to achieve real communication. This lack of dialogue occurs because humans have no interest in creating an honest and empathic relationship with the prawns, because their only priority is to get their hands on the advanced weaponry that the aliens brought with them.

Sector 9 podría verse también como alegoría al pasado segregacionista de Sudáfrica, para hacer la película el director y guionista sudafricano Neill Blomkamp tomo como punto de partida, las experiencias vividas en Sudáfrica durante la época de la Apartheid, siendo testigo de las fuertes medidas racistas e inhumanas tomadas contra las comunidades negras de Johannesburgo, donde se les obligaba a habitar en lugares delimitados específicamente para ellos, prohibiéndoles el derecho al voto o mantener relaciones sentimentales con personas blancas.

El uso del formato documental me pareció una excelente decisión para abrir la película, gracias a esta herramienta narrativa la intención de denuncia de la cinta adquiere fuerza, para permitirnos tomar con más seriedad lo que vemos en pantalla. Cuando los ciudadanos sudafricanos expresan su incomodidad y molestia con respecto a los langostinos, sus palabras pueden ser interpretadas como el descontento y rechazo de ciertas personas a los inmigrantes en cualquier parte del mundo, mostrándolo como algo deshumanizado o que no requiere de atención y no como la crisis que en realidad representan.

Uno de los detalles que más me llama la atención de la película, es el hecho de que los humanos han logrado entender el idioma de los langostinos pero en lugar de aprovechar esta oportunidad para atender sus necesidades, los humanos los desechan y deciden tratarlos como escoria agrupándolos en el Sector 9. Queda claro que los humanos y los langostinos entiendan sus lenguajes, pero se nota que esto no es suficiente para lograr una comunicación real. Esta falta de dialogo ocurre porque los humanos no tienen interés en crear una relación honesta y empática con los langostinos, no les interesa ayudarlos de forma alguna pues su única prioridad es hacerse con el avanzado armamento que los extraterrestres trajeron consigo.

The terrible actions against the prawns go beyond depriving them of any fundamental rights, they usurp them of their real names and give them ones that are easier to pronounce. They are subjected to experiments reminiscent of concentration camps, their offspring are aborted and they are constantly being lied.

Another fascinating aspect of this film is the introduction of the alien culture, which seems to be guided by leaders and by not having any present all the prawns progressively become less intelligent, aggressive and sedentary contrasting with the technology they possessed before falling into this state, this also being a consequence of having to adapt to human customs and the area where they are confined.

Otro aspecto fascinante de esta película es la introducción de la cultura alienígena, la cual parece que se guía por líderes y al no tener ninguno presente todas las langostas progresivamente se vuelven menos inteligentes, agresivas y sedentarias contrastando con la tecnología que poseían antes de caer en este estado, siendo esto también consecuencia de tener que adaptarse a las costumbres humanas y a la zona donde se encuentran confinados.

Now speaking of Wikus as the protagonist I find him a very unique case, as he is an unsympathetic character but at the same time quite intriguing, he represents the hypocrisy of the state, he should do things in a civilized and protocol way but crushes the rights of a species in the process, even when his ineptness leads him to suffer severe consequences it is difficult to empathize with him, as he continues to demonstrate xenophobic and selfish behaviors.

However we can't feel hatred for him either as life seems to be giving him the worst, what we feel for Wikus is pity. In District 9 the protagonist does not become a hero who defends the aliens, does not fall in love or fraternize with their community, but circumstances corner him into an unexpected alliance that serves as an engine for the moral and ideological transformation of the character.

Ahora hablando de Wikus como protagonista me parece un caso muy singular, ya que se trata de un personaje antipático pero al mismo tiempo bastante intrigante, él representa la hipocresía del estado, debe hacer las cosas de una manera civilizada y protocolar pero aplasta los derechos de una especie en el proceso, incluso cuando su ineptidud lo lleva a sufrir severas consecuencias resulta difícil empatizar con él, pues sigue demostrando comportamientos xenófobos y egotistas.

Sin embargo tampoco podemos sentir odio por él ya que la vida parece estar dándole lo peor, lo que sentimos por Wikus es más bien lástima. En Sector 9 el protagonista no se vuelve un héroe que defiende a los extraterrestres, no se enamora ni fraterniza con su comunidad, sino que las circunstancias lo arrinconan a formar una alianza inesperada que sirve como motor para la transformación moral e ideológica de Wikus.

In conclusion, District 9 is an excellent science fiction film and a reflection of us as a society, its story deals with the problems of human nature, the most shocking thing is that its origin comes from a terrible display of hatred that occurred for a long time in South Africa. From a superficial look the prawns can be seen only as alien beings, but in reality they are an allegory to the incalculable victims of xenophobia, to all those people who at some point in history have been oppressed by a major state, being stripped of their rights and their identity, it may be a science fiction film but the issues it deals and the characters it builds are not, that is what makes it one of the masterpieces of the 21st century, I am hopeful that the future sequel will finally be made and be as interesting as this one.

En conclusión, Sector 9 es una excelente película de ciencia ficción y un reflejo de nosotros como sociedad, su historia trata el problema de la naturaleza humana, lo más impactante es que su origen proviene de una terrible muestra de odio que ocurrió por mucho tiempo en Sudáfrica. Para una mirada superficial los langostinos pueden solo seres alienígenos, pero en realidad son una alegoría a las incalculables víctimas de la xenofobia, a todas esas personas que en algún momento de la historia se han visto oprimidas por un estado mayor, siendo despojadas de sus derechos y de su identidad, puede tratarse de una cinta de ciencia ficción pero los temas que trata y los personajes que construye no lo son, eso es lo que la convierten en una de las obras maestras del sigo 21, tengo esperanza de que la futura secuela se haga finalmente y sea tan interesante como ésta.
